The Coronavirus pandemic has caused the general public to panic-buy. Not only did this result in a shortage of essential items, such as toilet paper and hand sanitizer, but we have also reverted to buying items that are not environmentally friendly. In addition, we saw a resurgence in the use of plastic bags. Although challenging, it’s important to maintain the same purchasing habits you had before COVID-19. Groceries stores will remain open and you will be able to find the items you need. Here are 3 ways to reduce waste and save money during the Coronavirus pandemic:
1. Avoid Food Waste
Don’t overbuy! Purchase a reasonable amount of fresh produce and freeze what you can to make it last longer. Opt for non-perishables, including canned foods, dried goods, peanut butter, dried fruits and vegetables, canned fish, nuts and seeds, grains, jerky, granola bars, soup, and freeze-dried meals.
2. Clean Green
Always choose reusable cleaning supplies versus single-use alternatives. Here are a few options:
- Reusable rags versus paper towel
- Use bottles of cleaner instead of single-use disinfectant wipes
- Purchase re-fillable liquid containers versus re-purchasing new cleaning supplies
- Use vinegar to clean
3. Reuse
A great way to reduce waste and save money is to reuse household items! This can be done by simply cleaning and reusing the item. If it’s at the end of its life cycle, make it into an arts and crafts project instead of throwing everything away. Out of old paper, you can make newspaper beads, a collage frame, or napkin rings. Plastic can be transformed into a flower vase, plastic bottle lid art, or a milk bottle cap ornament. Meanwhile, glass can be made into a beaded bottle or a wine cork board. The possibilities are endless!
